Highlighted ELUG Member - Vincent Danen

You think you know a guy and then he surprises you.  Waaaaay back when I first started learning Linux, I joined the Edmonton Linux User Group Mailing List.  One of the members on the list was Vincent Danen.  He's an interesting character - very knowledgable and talented.

Back then I remember tossing a few emails between eachother, but I can't remember what we discussed.  It was probably because I was using Mandrake Linux at the time (now called Mandriva Linux) and Vincent was an expert with Mandriva and also did some sort of security update work for them and still does today.

He has his own flavour of Linux which he built called Annvix. "Annvix is a free secure Linux-based operating system produced by the Annvix development team and Danen Consulting Services. The Annvix project aims to provide a secure, stable, and fast Linux distribution specifically tailored to servers that provide reliable services such as Email, Web, DNS, FTP, File sharing, and more."

Vincent also operates Danen Consulting Service with the following service offerings:

  • Specializes in Linux and Mac OS X consulting, from desktop systems to servers and large networks in the Edmonton area.
  • Specializes in web application development (PHP, MySQL, and PostgreSQL).
  • Domain hosting services (with a preference to host charitable and non-profit organizations).

Among his many projects, he also has a nice resource of *Nix related articles at Linsec.ca.

So how did this guy surprise me?  Well, he left the ELUG mailing list for a number of years, and recently joined again.  Then in my email newsletters I get from TechRepublic.com, I see his name under an article I wanted to read called "Securely delete files with shred".  Vincent wrote the article and has been writing at TechRepublic for 8 years!
