What does SAS stand for?

I always thought SAS stood for Statistical Analysis Software. Apparently, it doesn’t stand for anything. Rick Aster, an author of a number of SAS books, writes:

Question
What does SAS stand for?

Answer

The letters in the name SAS do not stand for anything. This is true even though it is correct to write SAS in all capital letters.

Even though “SAS” does not stand for anything, it is amusing to consider what it might stand for and what some people think it stands for. Many phrases have been suggested, and of those, perhaps “such and such” is the closest to being accurate.
